The Great Debate: Self Publishing vs Traditional - Friesen Press

The publishing industry today looks much different than it did a decade ago. In that time, self-publishing has outgrown its longstanding 'vanity' stigma and become a viable publishing option for many writers. The traditional publishing industry has also experienced great changes and just isn’t what it used to be – even for those who’ve found success within the system.

This presentation will outline the ways in which self-publishing differs from traditional publishing, how the unrestricted nature of this path might align better with your publishing needs, as well as what to look at when choosing your publishing partners. We’ll also discuss the process of preparing your manuscript for publication and offer advice on how to successfully navigate the industry.

In the Forever Writers Club, we don’t focus on publishing, but we do focus on the self, the whole writer. We spend a lot of time understanding how writing lives alongside everything else we hold, and how it shapes who we are becoming. Even if you have no desire to publish, having more information is still of value. The choices we make about our creative work deserve care, clarity, and space.

This one-off session with FriesenPress is about holding space for thoughtful exploration. While their insights and experiences are their own, we're grateful to host them to offer a glimpse into one publishing pathway. Our hope is that this conversation helps you gather the information you need, ask the questions that matter most to you, and make decisions that feel rooted, intentional, and aligned.
